5 notes &
admittedly my talk of the Hokies has been relatively quite on here for the past 2 weeks and if you follow college football you know exactly why.
i was embarrassed for them, honestly. not for the first game because while they had quite a few mistakes and it wasn’t the prettiest sight they actually pulled it together and played. they played hard and they should have won that game (gave it up in the last few minutes - sadly not a new m.o.). but 5 days later they didn’t show up for the game. they had a stadium full of adoring fans standing in the pouring rain looking forward to them getting their game on and they just plain ol’ disappointed. it was sad, they were a mess. a complete and utter mess. there was little i could find to be happy about with that game, there were no moments of “oh, well at least they were able to XXX”. it was a very painful loss for the history of the VT football program and it marred Beamer’s career. quite honestly i was dreading the rest of the season. i mean after the game the players even admitted that they really didn’t study for that opponent, that they didn’t feel they needed to. and for me THAT’S what always kills my Hokies, the arrogance, the entitlement. you can tell when they step on the field and believe they don’t even need to be there to win and that’s when they’re often taught a lesson.
but this past weekend they restored my faith. don’t get me wrong, it’s still no where close to seamless or easy but they finally put a game together. there were completions and at the end there was some blocking (something we hadn’t seen all season) and as you can see from below we won handedly. the freshman QB got to jump in for a few plays at the end (because Beamer doesn’t believe in shaming other teams too badly) so it was the best outcome for a game no one knew what to expect from it.
i hope they can hold on to this momentum. i hope they can keep it together and gel as a team even better as the season progresses, especially this weekend at my sister’s Alma Mater.
win or lose i’m always a Hokie, i’m just a bit quieter about it when it’s painful : )
